India submits first biennial update report to UNFCCC

India today submitted its first Biennial Update Report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC) towards fulfillment of the reporting obligation. As per the provisions of the UNFCCC, countries are required to periodically provide information. The report contains national Green House Gases(GHG) inventory for 2010, prepared in accordance with the guidelines of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The inventory covers six greenhouse gases including Carbon dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide and Hydrofluorocarbons.<br/><br/>As per the report , India emitted around 2,137 million tonnes of Carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gases in 2010 and energy sector was the prime contributor to emissions with 71 percent. Industrial processes and product use contributed 8 percent and agriculture 18 percent to the national GHG inventory. India's per capita GHG emission in 2010 was less than one- third of the world's per capita emissions and far below many developed and developing countries.
