India today began exporting diesel via rail to Bangladesh with the rollout of first consignment from Siliguri in North Bengal. A goodwill rail rake carrying diesel from Numaligarh Refineries Ltd was flagged off today, an official statement said.

The consignment will travel over 516 km to reach Parbatipur on the 19th of this month. Official sources attributed it as a symbolic gesture of friendship and cooperation that exists between India and Bangladesh.

During the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh in June last year, petroleum companies from both the countries had signed an agreement for construction of pipeline from Siliguri to Parbatipur for supply of diesel to Bangladesh. Diesel would be moved through rail till the pipeline is constructed.
