India, Sri Lanka to hold delegation level talks over proposed ETCA from today

A two-day delegation level talks between India and Sri Lanka is beginning today to discuss the proposed Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement, ETCA. <br/><br/>The Indian delegation led by Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Minister, reached Colombo last evening for the discussions. <br/><br/>The two sides will discuss the draft proposals for ETCA, meant to integrate the two economies by creating more opportunities in investments and services. The two countries have already signed a Free trade agreement in place since 1998 meant to ease barriers in trade of goods.<br/><br/>During his visit to New Delhi last month, Sri Lanka's Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrama held discussions on ETCA with Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The two ministers agreed to start negotiations soon to finalize the agreement before the end of the year.<br/><br/>The talks are being held amidst concern expressed by some groups that Sri Lankans will lose job opportunities to the Indian professionals if the agreement comes into effect. India has sought to allay such fears saying it is prepared to move at a pace comfortable to Sri Lanka and address Sri Lanka's concerns on ETCA.
