India-Sri Lanka first test heading towards a draw

Superb centuries by Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar helped India draw the first test match against Sri Lanka in Ahmedabad. India were 412 for four when both sides decided to draw the match.Indian batsmen showed the guts and kept their record of not losing any home test to Sri Lanka intact. Gautam Gambhir played a resilient knock of 114 and shared important partnerships with Amit Mishra and Sachin Tendulkar, who not only completed his 43rd test ton but also climbed another peak by completing 30,000 international runs. The closest to Tendulkar's mark is Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who had recently crossed 24,000 runs. The batting maestro remained unbeaten on 100 while VVS Laxman remained not out on 51, sharing an unbeaten partnership of 137 runs for the fifth wicket. For Srilanka, Mahela Jayawardene earlier played a classic innings of 275 runs, followed by Prasanna Jayawardene who made an unbeaten154 runs.Sri Lanka started the day 144 in lead, and needed eight Indian wickets to force a result, but met a docile pitch and determined batting. The only break in concentration came in the second session when Gambhir stepped out to launch Rangana Herath out of the ground, and ended up losing his wicket. That was not before he had reached his seventh century: four of them, including his last three, have come in the second innings, two of them in match-saving scenarios.
