Team India suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of New Zealand team in the opening game of the Super 10 segment of the ongoing ICC World Cup T20 Cricket Tournament played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium at Jamtha near Nagpur last night. While chasing a victory target of 127 runs, the Indian innings collapsed like house of cards recording their second lowest total of 79 runs in the penultimate over as they were humbled by the Kiwis spinners.Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the top-scorer with 30 runs while the other batsman Virat Kohli who could show some resistance scored 23 runs. Mitchell Santner dealt a big blow to the Indian innings with the magic figures of four wickets for just 11 runs while he was complemented well by Ish Sodhi who claimed three and Nathan McCullum a couple for the Kiwis. Earlier, the Kiwis, who chose to bat first, managed to put up 126 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 20 overs after the initial struggle. Corey Anderson led with 34 runs while Luke Ronchi with unbeaten 21 and Mitchell Santner also chipped in with useful 18 runs for the visitors. Ravichandran Ashwin, Ashish Nehra, Jaspreet Bumrah, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja took one wicket each on the wicket having lot of turn and an uneven bounce which surprised one and all. With this, the task of the hosts, who are presently enjoying number one position in the ICC rakings and considered hot favourites as winners of the inaugural edition of this tournament in South Africa in 2007 and runner-up in Bangladesh two years ago, now face an uphill task. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side would have to give matching performance and live up to the reputation in order to face the emerging challenges.
