The government today assured the Lok Sabha that a meeting will soon be convened between India and Sri Lanka to sort out the issue of frequent transgressions by fishermen of the two countries into each other's maritime limits.
Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh said the transgressions take place because the maritime boundaries between the two countries are very close. Answering supplementaries, he said the Coast Guard has taken necessary steps to protect Indian fishermen.
It is important for them to get their boats equipped with proper navigational aids to ensure that they do not stray into Sri Lankan waters. The Minister informed the House that Indian fishing boats are being fitted with transponders to guide them.
