India should take proactivemeasures to cut greenhouse gas emissions: Jairam Ramesh

Minister of State for Environment and Forests Mr. Jairam Ramesh said that India should not expect much from Copenhagen summit. However, at the same time, it will take steps to cut emissions on the domestic front.<br/>Adressing media after releasing the UN's State of World Population Report 2009, Mr. Ramesh said in New Delhi today, India must take aggressive and proactive domestic measures to cut its greenhouse gas emissions irrespective of what happened at international fora.<br/>The Minister stressed that it will be in India's own interest to adopt a low carbon trajectory as we were going to suffer most from the effects of climate change. He said a low carbon economy will be central to the 12th five-year plan. He added that in fact India through its growth model can set alternative patters for growth without leaving carbon footprints.<br/>
