India seeks global cooperation to curb money laundering

The Union Finance Minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday called upon nations to strengthen the capabilities against money laundering and terrorist financing to ensure an effective and more productive crusade against the menace.Inaugurating the 14th annual meet of Asia Pacific Group on Money Laundering in Kochi on Tuesday, Mr Mukherjee reiterated that India is fully committed to implement the international standards against money laundering and terrorist financing.He said the country is in the process of making suitable amendments to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act to bring them in line with the core recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force, the global policy response to the threats posed by money laundering.The Finance Minister also stressed the importance of mutual legal assistance and exchange of information and intelligence among enforcement agencies.Nearly 350 delegates from 40 countries are participating in the five day meet. India is currently co-chair of the Asia Pacific Group on Money Laundering along with Australia.
