India scripts history as Mangalyaan enters Mars; World hails India's achievement

India became the first country to achieve the feat of reaching Martian orbit in its first attempt itself with the successful insertion of The Mars Orbiter Mission into orbit today. The liquid Apogee motor was fired for about 24 minutes to reduce the speed of the spacecraft and orient it towards the red planet.

Congratulating the scientists of ISRO for this remarkable feat, Prime Minister said the launch was indigenously designed at a cost less than that spent on a Hollywood movie. Mr Narendra Modi suggested that the victory of Indian scientists should be celebrated in the schools.

Meanwhile, congratulations are pouring in on the successful Orbit Insertion Maneuver of Mangalyaan. Congratulating Indian Space Research Organisation scientists, President Pranab Mukherjee said, the nation is proud of the historic achievement which has demonstrated, yet again, India’s space capabilities.

Vice President Mohd Hamid Ansari, in his message, expressed confidence that Indian scientists will continue to scale greater heights and win more laurels for the country in the field of space exploration.

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has also congratulated the space scientists for the feat.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in her message, said India has earned its admirable position in the world as a pioneering space exploring nation with Mangalayan.

The United States congratulated India for entering the elite group of space-faring nations after the successful insertion of Mars Orbiter Mission into the planet's orbit. A statement from the US Embassy congratulated India and ISRO on its Mars Orbiter Mission. Earlier in the day, NASA congratulated ISRO for its success. In a tweet it said Mars Orbiter joins the missions studying the Red Planet.

China too has congratulated India on the successful mission. In a message, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said Mangalyaan is India’s pride, but also the pride of Asia.
