India says Obama's support for India's nomination to UNSC as unequivocal & explicit political

India today described US President Obama's support for India's candidature for permanent membership of the UN Security Council as unequivocal and an explicit political statement. Rejecting the notion that it was only symbolic , sources said it had both substance and symbolism. On Iran, the sources said that India like other countries in the nuclear watchdog IAEA, is of the view that Iran has the right to peaceful nuclear energy programme but it has to fulfill certain international obligations. They also referred to Prime Minister statement that India does not want another nuclear weapon state in its neighbourhood. The sources at the same time maintained that Iran is an important neighbour and India has civilizational links with it which cannot be abandoned. On Obama's reference to India avoiding certain issues like that of Myanmar, sources said that India is for peace and reconciliation in that country. India's foreign policy is guided by its national interest, situation in the region and strategic geopolitical compulsions.The sources said that Myanmar shares 1600 kilometers border with India in the North-East and there are issues of insurgency, connectivity and security. They also pointed to Myanmar's strategic location.
