India says, it is closely monitoring Chinese intentions and developments in the region

Admitting that China has been showing more than normal interest in the Indian Ocean affairs, India today said that it is closely monitoring the Chinese intentions and developments in the region. The External Affairs Minister, Mr S M Krishna assured the Lok Sabha today that appropriate measures will be taken to safeguard the territorial integrity of Indian waters and interests of Indian fishermen. He said that he will also discuss the issue with the Sri Lankan leadership during his visit to Sri Lanka sometime in October. Responding to a calling attention on the situation arising out of recent attacks on Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy, the Minister said that there is a steady decline in the incidents of arrests of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka. He said while in 2008, 1456 Indian fishermen were arrested, it came down to 127 last year and 26 by the end of July this year. He also said that Indian fishermen have been advised not to get into the sensitive waters of Sri Lanka and their territorial waters. He said the Joint Working Group set up by India and Sri Lanka is also discussing issues related to fishermen and to work out bilateral institutional arrangements for ensuring the safety and security of the fishermen of both the countries.
