India saved over 3.4 million lives during COVID through vaccination: Health Minister Mandaviya

<span style="color: #222222;">Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday said that India adopted a 'Whole of Government and 'Whole of Society' approach in a proactive, preemptive and graded manner for effective management of Covid-19. Dr Mandaviaya was delivering his address at Stanford's India Dialog session during the release of the report -Healing the Economy: Estimating the Economic Impact of India's Vaccination and Related measures. He said, as mentioned in the report, India was able to save more than 3.4 million lives by undertaking the nationwide vaccination campaign at an unprecedented scale. He mentioned that while the prime focus of the campaign was always on saving lives, it also yielded a positive economic impact by preventing the loss of  18.3 billion US dollar. <br />''<br />''He said, this resulted in a net benefit of 15.42 billion US dollar for the nation after taking into consideration the cost of the vaccination campaign. The Health Minister informed that the government of India launched the world's biggest vaccination drive on 16th January, 2021. So far more than 2.2 billion doses were administered to the eligible beneficiaries with 97 per cent first dose coverage and 90 per cent 2nd dose coverage. He mentioned that the vaccination drive was supported by the relentless efforts of vaccinators who traversed mountains, deserts, and difficult geographical terrain to reach individuals in far-flung areas of the country.<br />''<br />'' Dr Mandaviya added that the government utilized CoWIN vaccine management platform as its backbone which monitored the doses administered across the country and provided QR-code based vaccination certificates. He further stated that numerous and timely financial packages introduced during the pandemic were crucial in mitigating the economic fallout. He also informed that the government of India introduced relief packages worth  4.6 billion US dollar to enable healthcare infrastructure augmentation and states were allowed utilization of more than 50 per cent of funds from the State Disaster Relief Fund. He mentioned that under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana food grains were distributed to 800 million people which resulted in an economic impact of nearly  26.24 billion US dollar.</span><br />
