India, Russia sign five pacts in Defence, Civil Nuclear Energy and Space Science

India and Russia have signed five agreements to enhance cooperation in the areas of nuclear energy, space science and have finalised long pending defence cooperation projects. <br/><br/>The agreements were signed after more than two and half hour talks between the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his Russian counterpart Mr. Vladimir Putin in New Delhi today. They have also agreed to intensify their consultations on Afghanistan and challenges posed by terrorism and extremism in the region. <br/><br/>The agreements are on cooperation in the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes, roadmap for serial construction of Russian designed nuclear power plants in India, MoU on the joint enterprise for production of satellite navigation equipment and services for civilian users.<br/><br/> They have also signed an agreement and an MoU on the cooperation in mineral fertilizers and on the import of DAP fertilizers. Later, in a joint press meet along with Mr. Putin, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh that they have<br/><br/>also agreed to strengthen their cooperation in hydrocarbons through collaboration between the oil and Gas companies of the two countries. Information Technology and Telecommunications will be the focus areas for future economic cooperation. <br/><br/>While talking about the special nature of Russia's relations with India, Mr. Putin said that his country has no military cooperation with Pakistan because of the Indian concerns. He said the joint efforts by India and Russia on the fifth generation fighter aircraft can yield positive results. He also said that there is a need to develop trade and economic ties which have lots of potential that remains to be tapped.
