India, Russia sign civil nuke deal, three defence deals inked

India and Russia further consolidated their long-standing relationship with a civil nuclear agreement that would ensure transfer of technology and uninterrupted uranium fuel supplies to its nuclear reactors. Additionally, the two countries signed three pacts in the defence sector. The three defence agreements are Programme on Military and Technical cooperation for the period 2011-2020, Agreement on After sale support for Arms and Military Equipment supplied by Russia to India and protocol to the agreement on cooperation in Development and Production of Military Transport Aircraft of 12 November- 2007. Moreover, Agreement on Dollar Credit line between EXIM Bank of India and Russian Bank of Development and Foreign Economic Affairs and Programme for Cultural Exchange for the period 2010-2012 was also signed on Monday.<br/><br/>The joint declaration released after talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the Kremlin said the two countries will undertake to take steps to deepen bilateral cooperation and raise their strategic partnership to the next level. The two sides called for an early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism challenges and threats, including such cooperations within the framework of the India-Russia working group on combating international terrorism. Dr.Manmohan Singh said that both the countries will share intelligence and information gathering in their fight against terrorism. After protracted re-negotiations, India and Russia have ended the stalemate over contentious price and technical issues for the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier which had become an irritant in bilateral ties. Talking to reporters in Moscow, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said that there has been excellent progress in negotiations on technical issues and there has been a successful conclusion. Details of the final price fixed for the sale of the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya are not immediately available.
