Imparting a new impetus to their time tested relations, India and Russia have signed 30 agreements in areas ranging from science, nuclear energy, culture, deffence, pharmaceuticals, IT, Communications, space and other important strategic sectors.The two countries inked a contract for jointly building a fifth generation fighter jet. Eleven agreements were signed in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and visiting Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who reiterated his country's support for India's bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.With a view to widen energy partnership between the two countries a pact between department of atomic energy and Russia's state atomic energy corporation was inked besides an agreement in oil and gas sector. Ending speculation, the two sides also signed a preliminary design contract for building a fifth generation fighter aircraft. The contract envisages joint design and development of the aircraft with the involvement of Hindustan Aeronautics limited.For maintaining seamless supply of cruise missiles to the Indian armed forces, BrahMos Aerospace and a Russian company also signed a protocol to ensure there are no price escalation issues during the contract period. Russia is the third of the four p-5 nations who pledged support to India's quest for the permanent membership of the UN Security Council in the last one month, signaling India's growing stature at the global level.Medvedev who arrived in India on a two-day visit early late last night also marked the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the strategic partnership between the two countries. He held delegation level talks with the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for nearly two hours in New Delhi and discussed a host of issues, including the expansion of civil nuclear cooperation, the intensification of bilateral economic ties, global terrorism and the international financial crisis.In a joint statement issued after the talks the two countries Vowed to double their bilateral trade to 20 billion us dollars by 2015, the two sides discussed setting up additional nuclear reactors in Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu. AIR correspondent reports that expanding counter-terror cooperation figured prominently in the talks between the two leaders.
