India renews support to Palestinian bid for UN membership

India has renewed its support to the Palestinian bid for the membership of the United Nations despite its opposition by the United States. Briefing reporters in New York on Friday the Indian representative in the UN Hardeep Puri said that New Delhi will extend unflinching support to its bid either in the UN General Assembly or in Security Council. In reply to a volley of questions on the issue, he made it clear that India is the first non Arab State to extend support to the Palestinian cause and its bid for the membership of the world body. The Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to address the assembly on Saturday. He plans to go ahead with his plan to hand over an application for seeking the membership to UN chief Ban Ki-moon later in the day.AIR correspondent covering the assembly reports from New York that hectic diplomatic activity is on behind the scene to dissuade Palestine from going ahead with his plan and instead start direct talks Israel. Diplomatic sources do not rule out use of veto by the United States if it is not left with any other option. US President Barack Obama in his address to the assembly yesterday cautioned world leaders that a Palestinian nation can't be created by a resolution, but only through hard negotiations In his address French President Nicolas Sarkozy came with a proposition urging the UN to grant Palestinians the status of an observer state like the Vatican, while laying out road map for a one year time frame for peace.
