Rejecting any third party mediation in dealing with Pakistan, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has asserted that dialogue is the only way forward to resolve the issues. Replying to the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address in the Rajya Sabha, Dr Manmohan Singh said that the decision to resume Foreign Secretary level talks with Pakistan is a calculated step, weighing all the costs and benefits. The Prime Minister strongly rejected that the talks were resumed under US pressure and cautioned that the chances of miscalculation can only increase in an environment of no contact. He however made it clear that for any meaningful dialogue, the terror machine has to be controlled by Islamabad even if non-state actors are at work. Referring to his talks with the Saudi leadership during his recent visit, the Prime Minister made it clear that India Pakistan ties came up for discussions as Saudi Arab itself is affected by terrorism. Rejecting Opposition allegation of seeking a third party mediation, he said that Saudi leaders were told as he has been talking to other world leaders, that problems between India and Pakistan can be resolved only through a bilateral dialogue if Islamabad takes a reasonable attitude in dealing with terrorists targeting India. He asserted there is no need of any mediation as the two countries are directly talking.
