India reiterates its long term commitment to reconstruction of Afghanistan

India has reiterated its long term commitment to the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan and the efforts under the leadership of President Hamid Karzai to build a strong independent democratic, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan. This was stated in a joint statement issued during the visit of the President of Afghanistan Mr. Hamid Karzai to New Delhi. Common threat of terrorism and other issues of bilateral and regional interest were discussed during the talks the visiting Afghan President had with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The two leaders also agreed that the strategic partnership between the two countries is a positive factor for peace and stability in the region.President Karzai while expressing gratitude for assistance provided by India over the years, underlined the need for the both sides to work together in close cooperation in the interest of the people of the two countries and stability in the region. Dr. Manmohan Singh accepted an invitation from President Karzai to visit Afghanistan at an early date.
