India and Papua New Guinea will be signing four MoUs today to give a boost to their growing relationship. Briefing reporters at the end of a hectic day of discussions that President Pranab Mukherjee had with the top leadership of the Pacific Island country, in Papua New Guinea capital Port Moresby yesterday, the Secretary East in the Ministry of External Affairs said, the MoUs relate to Agriculture, Health, Information Technology and Infrastructure.<br/><br/>The President who was accorded a ceremonial welcome followed by a traditional one on arrival, drove down to the Bomana War Cemetery to lay a wreath at the memorial built in honour of the soldiers of the World War II. He held talks with Governor General Michael Ogio, Prime Minister Peter O' Neal, the leader of the Opposition Don Poyle and the Governor of West New Britain.<br/><br/>Mr. Mukherjee said, his visit to Papua New Guinea is a precursor of intensified economic, development and security cooperation to realize the great potential that lies untapped in the relations between the two countries. He said, the institutionalization of the FIPIC Summit process is a clear indication that India intends to seriously engage with this entire region. Mr. Mukherjee said, the underlying narrative of India's engagement with the developing world is non-exploitative and developmental. <br/><br/>The Health and Pharmaceuticals sector is poised for a big boost. The MoU on the subject envisages training of Papua New Guinea doctors and nurses in India and deputation of Indian physicians, nurses and trainers to Papua New Guinea. It also envisages Indian assistance in expansion and development of Government Hospitals in Papua New Guinea.<br/><br/>It is proposed in the MoU that India would support Papua New Guinea to establish a Pharmaceutical Production Unit which would meet the demands of crucial life-saving medicines. India has also agreed to provide anti-retro- viral products for 20,000 HIV/AIDS patients and ancillary equipment that will help monitor HIV etc.<br/><br/>Another MoU relates to the setting up of an ICT Training School of Excellence in Papua New Guinea. India will also provide a 100-million dollar Line of Credit for financing two crucial projects- one, to provide economic corridors of the coastal provinces and the highlands region. The second relates to the construction of a National Court complex in the Western highlands province.<br/><br/>India will also provide assistance in agricultural research, education and how to achieve high agricultural yield. India will work actively with the Government of Papua New Guinea in both upstream and downstream projects involving the Petroleum and Natural Gas Sector. Papua New Guinea on its part has agreed to provide visa on arrival for tourists and support India's candidature for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.
