Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan met in Islamabad today ahead of the Foreign Ministers’ dialogue tomorrow. They discussed all aspects of the resumed dialogue between the two countries. Briefing newsmen, spokesman of external affairs ministry Sayed Akbaruddin said that Mr.Ranjan Matahi and his Pakistani counterpart, Mr. Jaleel Abbas Jeelani acknowledged that progress has been made but agreed much more needs to be done. He said, the meeting which lasted for two hours was cordial, frank and positive.
The delegation included Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Sharat Sabharwal, Joint Secretary( Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan) in the Ministry of External Affairs Yash Sinha. The Pakistan delegation had High Commissioner to India Salman Bashir, Director General (South Asia) at the Pakistan Foreign Office Zehra Akbari and others. Both the ministers will co-chair the joint commission meeting tomorrow,.
The JCM was revived in 2005 after a pause of 16 years. Indian official sources say, terrorism and 26/11 Mumbai terror attack will form the core of New Delhi's discussions. There is also a likelihood of agreements on a liberalised visa regime and cultural exchanges to be signed during the visit.Mr.Krishna arrived in Islamabad this morning on a three day visit to Pakistan to review the last round of the bilateral dialogue with Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar.
In his arrival statement, Mr.Krishna expressed India’s desire to see a stable and prosperous Pakistan living in peace with itself and the world. He said, that a peacefull Pakistan will be in the best interest of everyone.
Pakistan foreign secretary Jalil Abbas Jeelani also described the talks as positive and very good.
