Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan have underlined the need for sustained effort by the two countries to build a relationship of trust and mutually beneficial cooperation. The two leaders agreed that terrorism poses a continuing threat to peace and security and reiterated their firm commitment to eliminate this menace. They also agreed that increase in trade and economic engagement between the two countries will be mutually beneficial as the Commerce Secretaries of the two countries have already decided on a number of important steps to realise the full potential of bilateral trade. The minister expressed satisfaction over the progress in finalisation of a revised visa agreement. This agreement will help in liberalising visa regime and facilitate people-to-people, business-to-business and sports contact. Mr. S. M. Krishna and Hinna Rabbani Khar also decided to resume work of the India-Pakistan joint commission and noted that the technical level working groups will be responsible for identifying avenues of cooperation. Mr. S. M. Krishna said that the talks were satisfactory and the two sides discussed Jammu and Kashmir and other issues. Responding to a question on Kashmir while addressing a joint press conference after the meeting, Pakistan Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir said that they are no simple answers to such complex issues. The Foreign Secretary Ms. Nirupama Rao said that the two countries have decided to continue their dialogue to narrow down their differences. She said New Delhi conveyed its concern to Pakistani side on meeting with Hurriyat. Ms. Nirupama Rao said that counter terrorism measures including progress in Mumbai attack trial in Pakistan also figured prominently in the talks. Ms. Rao again asserted that dialogue can progress only in an atmosphere free from terror and violence. Indian side also stressed the need for speedy completion of trial in Pakistan responsible for 26/11 Mumbai attacks. AIR correspondent reports that humanitarian issues, Tulbul navigation project, Sir Creek, Siachen and CBMs on promotion of friendly exchanges also came up for discussion in the meeting.
