India @ Olympics: Boxing, shooting tennis and a lot more

A dazzling display of 21st century technology, lights and fireworks combined with Britain of the old and a surprise first acting role for Queen Elizabeth alongwith 'James Bond' Daniel Craig marked the opening of the London Olympic Games early this morning. Queen Elizabeth II declared the Games open amid thunderous cheers from the capacity crowd signalling the launch of the biggest sporting spectacle, which returned to Britain after a gap of 64 years, giving the country the distinction of holding the mega event for an unprecedented third time.This time, it is the largest Indian contingent ever with record of a group of 81 persons.In Archery, the very first day of the event, it was a great disappointment for both Men's and Women's Indian team in Recurve Ranking round. Women's team landed in 9th rank whereas Men's team ranked last among 12 teams. In the elimination round, India's Tarundeep Rai, Rahul Bannerjee and Jayant Talukdar will have to face tough teams today to decide medals in Men's competition.In Boxing, India's Vijender Singh will take on Danabek Suzhanov of Kazakhstan in the men's 75 kilogram category, while Shiva Thapa will face Mexican Oscar Valdez Fierro in the 56 kilogram division.In Shooting, Vijay Kumar will be competing in the 10 metre Air Pistol event. The medal in this event will be decided today.In Tennis, the duo of Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakraborthy will meet the pair of Su Wei Hsieh and Chia-Jung Chuang of Taipei in the Women's Doubles opening round. Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer and Serena Williams will also have to face their first matches today. Federer will take on Alejandro Falla of Columbia while Serena will face Jelena Yankovic of Serebia.In Badminton, P. Kashyap will clash with Yuhan Tan of Belgium in the Men's Singles first round. In the Women's Doubles, the duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will meet the Japanese pair of Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa. In the Mixed Doubles category, the combination of Jwala Gutta and V Diju will play the Indonesian pair of Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad.In Weightlifting, Soniya Chanu will begin her campaign in the Women's 48 kilogram section.In Table Tennis, Soumyajit Ghosh will play Gustavo Tsuboi of Brazil in the Men's Singles opening round, while Ankita Das will clash with Sara Ramirez of Spain in the Women's Singles category.In Rowing, Swaran Singh will begin his challenge in Men's Singles Scull Heats.In Swimming competitions, Michel Phelps and Ryan Lochte will participate in individual 400-meter event.
