India nuclear triad to be complete by 2012

India's nuclear triad will be completed by 2012 when its indigenous nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant becomes operational .This will complete the nation's capability to deliver strategic weapons from land, air and undersea. Talking to newspersons at his annual press conference in New Delhi, Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma said that the Arihant would be the first in the series of three indigenous nuclear- powered submarines. AIR correspondent reports that only three countries, US, Russia and China can be said to have fully-operational nuclear weapon triads — the capability to fire nuclear-tipped missiles from land, air and sea.Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma also informed that a National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) is on the anvil for integrating and creating a common information grid for all sea-faring agencies for effective coastal security measures. Admiral Verma said that once implemented, the NMDA will enable effective sharing of maritime related information seamlessly among all stakeholders for informed decisions and faster response by security agencies. He said the Navy has already established four Joint Operation Centres at Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, Kochi and Port Blair. Admiral Verma said the Navy also made efforts to create awareness among the large fishing community in the coastal villages and towns to integrate it into the coastal security matrix.
