India not soft on China: Krishna

Rejecting the opposition charge of being soft in its policy towards China, the government today said that India has become a strong nation and earned the respect of the world and it is in a position to face any adversary. The External Affairs Minister, however, said that the conflict is not a solution and the best way forward is dialogue. Mr. S. M Krishna said that India is fully secure in what it says and how it deals with Beijing. He was replying to a debate in Lok Sabha on India-China relations with special reference to recent occurrences.

Responding to the concerns of members with regard to Chinese incursions, Mr. Krishna said that is no need to have any apprehensions with regard to safeguarding our borders which he said are being constantly monitored and their defences strengthened. He said that incursions take place because of the different perception of the two countries as borders are not demarcated. Expressing the hope that such incursions will be contained, Mr. Krishna said that India’s approach is to diffuse the differences at field and local level through the existing mechanism so that the differences are not enlarged. Mr. Krishna said that the 3rd Defence dialogue with china will start next month for better understanding between the armed forces of the two countries .He said leadership of both the countries want to strengthen their bilateral cooperation and this can be done in an atmosphere of trust, mutual respect and understanding of the positions of each other on various issues. Reiterating that Arunachal Pradesh is part and parcel of our country, the minister said that the Prime Minister visited the state and so did Dalalai lama despite the Chinese objections. On the stopping of work on road construction in Ladakh on India China Border, the Minister said that the centre had no role in either starting or stopping the project and it was the decision of the Jammu and Kashmir.

The members drew the attention of the government to the Chinese incursions as well as its recent aggressive posturing. Initiating the discussion Dr Murli Manohar Joshi said that there is a need to introspect deeply on what are the intentions behind this. He said that there have been over 200 incursions by Chinese last year. He wanted the government to address the members concerns and take parliament into confidence on its China policy because the issue involves the country's security and future. The Congress on the other hand dismissed the fear psychosis with regard to China saying that India is fully equipped to defend its pride.
