India-Nepal foreign secretary level talks: Bilateral issues discussed

In Nepal, the visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao on Tuesday held a wide ranging discussion with her Nepalese counterpart Dr. Madan Prasad Bhattarai in Kathmandu Tuesday afternoon.Talking to newsmen, Dr. Bhattarai said the two sides discussed bilateral issues including the implementation of past agreements between the two countries. The discussions focused on integrated check posts on the India-Nepal border to facilitate travel and commerce, expansion of roads, railways and checking trafficking of counterfeit Indian currency notes.On her arrival in Kathmandu this morning, Indian Foreign Secretary said India is committed to working with political leaders for a democratic, stable, peaceful and prosperous Nepal. She said India's relations with Nepal will continue to be matter of highest priority for its southern neighbour.The visiting Foreign Secretary later called on the Preasident Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, caretaker Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Chairman of the Constituent assembly Subhash Nemwang and Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchadar and discussed matters of mutual interest between the two countries.AIR correspondent reports, Foreign Secretary Nirupama who arrived in Kathmandu on Tuesday afternoon on a three day visit to Nepal held a wide ranging discussion with her Nepalese counterpart Dr. Madan Bhattarai this afternoon on expanding and strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. Tomorrow, the Foreign Secretary is scheduled to meet Maoist Chairman Prachanda, Nepali Congress President Sushal Koirala and CPN(UML) President Jhalnath Khanal and leaders of other parties tomorrow. On Thursday, the Foreign Secretary will meet Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala. Her visit came days after Nepal's President Dr. Yadav asked Nepalese political parties to reach a consensus on forming a national government before January 21. This is Mrs. Rao's third visit to Nepal after she took over as the Foreign Secretary.
