India, Nepal agree to cooperate to control cross-border crimes

A joint statement issued at the end of the three-day visit of the External Affairs Minister Mr. S. M. Krishna to Nepal on Sunday afternoon said Mr. Krishna and his Nepalese counterpart Ms. Sujata Koirala have discussed ways to enhance bilateral security cooperation to control cross-border crimes. Mr. Krishna assured Nepal that India was willing to provide all possible assistance to it, including to its security organisations, as per its request.<br/><br/>During the bilateral meeting, Ms. Koirala assured Mr. Krishna that her government will not allow the Nepalese territory to be used for any activity directed against India and both sides agreed to take necessary steps to preserve law and order situation and peace and tranquility along the Indo-Nepal border, the statement said.<br/><br/>On the issue of the 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty, the two ministers have directed the Foreign Secretaries of both the countries to discuss and review the treaty with a view to further strengthens bilateral relations.<br/><br/>The joint statement said that India expressed its commitment to assist Nepal in strengthening its peace, stability and democratic institutions and for its economic development.<br/><br/> <br/>The External Affairs Minister Mr. Krishna and his Nepalese counterpart Ms. Sujata Koirala reiterated the importance of regular high level interaction for further strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries. The Summing up his visit, Mr. Krishna said he was fully satisfied with the outcome of the visit and found there was a lot of goodwill among the political leadership of Nepal. He said majority of them wants good relations with India, considering the historical, civilization and geographical links between the two countries. During the visit he met leaders of major political parties and discussed issues relating to political developments, peace process and drafting of the new constitution. The visit was the first by any high level Indian leader to Nepal after the CPN(UML) led coalition government assumed power in may last year following the resignation of the Maoist-led government on the army chief row.
