India today said it took the decision to approach International Court of Justice on the issue of retired Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav as he is in illegal detention in Pakistan and his life is under threat.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Gopal Baglay said, the decision was taken in the case after careful deliberations. He said India made 16 requests for consular access to Jadhav but there was no response from Pakistan.

Islamabad has also not responded to India's request for papers relating to Jadhav's case.

There is also no information on the status of appeal by Jadhav's family against the order of a Pakistan military court which sentenced him to death for alleged spying.

The spokesperson also said External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had written to Pakistan Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz on 27th April, requesting visa for Jadhav's family. But there is no response from Pakistan in this regard.

The International Court of Justice at the Hague had yesterday stayed the execution of Jadhav. The order came a day after India approached the court against the death sentence handed down to Jadhav by Pakistan.

In reply to a question on Indian woman Uzma, who had taken shelter at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, Gopal Baglay said Indian officials are in touch with Pakistan Foreign Office for her safe return.

On reported denial of medical visas to Pakistani nationals, Mr Baglay said, such visas have not been stopped. He, however, said, India needs recommendation from Pakistan authorities for obtaining medical visas.
