The country missed the electricity output target by over two percent in the last fiscal. The shortage was mainly due to lower coal production and its availability particularly for power generation. According to the latest report of Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the country produced over 811 billion units of power as against the target of over 830 billion units. The report stated that overall shortfall of 2.4 per cent was mainly due to deficit in thermal power generation, which accounts for 65 per cent of the total capacity. The coal production in the country in 2010-11 fell eight percent short of the target. However, the power generation from two other major sources hydro and nuclear exceeded their last fiscal targets. The Central Electricity Authority in its estimates stated that the country witnessed a power shortage of 8.5 per cent in 2010-11 which is expected to further rise to over 10 per cent this fiscal.
