India is expected to become the second largest steel producing nation by 2012. Minister for Steel, Mr Virbhadra Singh said that at present the steel sector contributes about two percent of the GDP and employs over five lakh people.Addressing the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry, Mr Singh said that India, currently the fourth largest producer of steel, will achieve a target production of 120 million tonnes by 2012.
