External Affairs minister Salman Khurshid on Friday said that Malaysia shared with India the dissapointment over the termination of USD 511 million GMR Male airport project by the Maldivian government.
GMR from India had 77 per cent stake while Malaysian government-owned MAHB held 23 per cent in the upgradation of Male International Airport project awarded by the previous Nasheed government in Maldives.
Speaking to newsmen in New Delhi Mr. Khurshid said, the matter was mentioned in the bilateral meeting between India and Malaysia, and both sides shared their disappointment over the development.
He said, both countries had the same understanding that there were two separate issues, one was pure assessment of contract and legal steps taken, while the other, if there were political reasons behind such a termination.
Mr. Khurshid said, Malaysia for its future prospects elsewhere, also secured from Maldivians a letter indicating that performance and quality of performance was not the ground at all for termination.
The External Affairs minister said, India has conveyed to Maldives that if there were political reasons behind the termination, they should be contained and not be allowed to spill over in the bilateral ties.
