India and Malaysia today called for the early implementation of all understandings and agreements in the Joint Statement on the Framework for a Strategic Partnership. Both countries agreed that this should be accorded top priority in their bilateral ties. External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, who led the Indian delegation at the 5th Joint Commission Meeting in Kuala lumpur, said the two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on how to make early progress on issues like double taxation avoidance agreement, MoU on customs cooperation and operationalisation of the joint working group on counter terrorism. India also asked the Malaysian side, which was led at the talks by Foreign Minister Anifah Aman, to consider greater imports from India as a way of having balanced and sustainable trade in the long term. India said, it regarded Malaysia as one of its key interlocutors in ASEAN and that it had discussed the importance of strengthening India-ASEAN ties. Krishna said he hoped, Malaysia as ASEAN coordinator will facilitate the early completion of FTA in services and investments. He said, India looked forward to the participation of Malaysian Premier Najib Razak in the special India-ASEAN summit that India will host in 2012. Krishna also invited his counterpart to visit India.
