India scripted a glorious new chapter in their cricketing history last night by regaining the coveted Cricket World Cup after 28 years. In a nerve-wrecking summit clash of the 2011 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup tournament at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, they beat Sri Lanka by an emphatic margin of six wickets. With the victory, India also became the first nation to win the World Cup on the home soil. India's maiden World Cup triumph came in 1983, when they beat the West Indies in the final at Lord's in a sixty over a side match. The win was also a fitting farewell to coach Gary Kirsten, for whom it was the last day in office as the Indian coach. The highlight of the Lankan innings was Mahela Jayawardene's rollicking 103 as Sri Lanka capitalised on the batting powerplay to post a decent 274 for six after electing to bat.
