India, Japan to hold strategic dialogue in Tokyo

India and Japan will hold their fifth strategic dialogue in Tokyo from Friday .The two day dialogue will explore ways to deepen the bilateral cooperation on a number of issues ranging from jointly combating piracy and terrorism to climate change and the evolving East Asia architecture.

New Delhi is expected to discuss the prospects of civil nuclear cooperation that took a hit after the Fukushima disaster earlier this year. The Indian side at the talks will be led by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and Japan by his counterpart Koichiro Gemba.

Several agreements are expected to be finalized during the talks between S M Krishna and his counterpart. Tokyo may also renew its commitment to the multibillion dollar Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor project. It is likely to announce its official development assistance for New Delhi despite devastating tsunami that hit Japan earlier this year.

Maritime security is expected to be at the centre of discussions apart from seeking Tokyo's support for New Delhi's membership of top multilateral nuclear regimes including Nuclear Suppliers Group. India-Japan strategic dialogue takes place barely weeks before the East Asia Summit on 17-18 of next month that will focus on evolving an inclusive regional architecture in which the countries have high stakes The dialogue will set the stage for annual summit between the Japanese Prime Minister and his Indian Counter part in December this year .
