India-Japan sign a joint statement

Japan has said that civil nuclear cooperation with India is an important agenda for future but has remained non committal on the issue for now. The matter came up for discussion at the 4th bilateral summit between the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his Japanese counterpart Dr. Yukio Hatoyama in New Delhi on Tuesday. The two leaders also signed a joint statement on new Strategic and global partnership and came out with an action plan to to advance security cooperation. The two leaders during their talks shared the view that nuclear energy is a safe and non polluting source of energy and decided to exchange views and information on their respective nuclear energy policies.<br/>Later in a joint interaction with the media Dr. Manmohan Singh while pitching for civil nuclear cooperation with Japan spoke of India's impeccable record in nuclear non proliferation. He said India welcomes Japanese investment saying that there vast scope for cooperation in urban infrastructure, high technology and renewable and energy efficient technology.<br/>While admitting that restrictions remain in the high tech areas the Japanese Prime Minister Dr. Hatoyama talked about efforts for possible relaxation in view of India's strong commitment on non proliferation. Hoping that India will sign the CTBT he admitted that there were differences between the two on NPT.
