India, Japan resolve to speed up talks to conclude civil nuclear pact

India and Japan resolved to speed up negotiations to conclude a civil nuclear agreement at the earliest. The two countries have asked their negotiators to arrive at a mutually satisfactory agreement on civil nuclear energy cooperation at an early date. The third rounds of talks on the issue will be held in the 3rd week of next month. The Joint statement issued after the talks between Dr. Manmlohan Singh and his Japanese counter Naoto Kan says that while welcoming the start of negotiations on the agreement , the two leaders affirmed that that cooperation in the sector will open up new opportunities for further developing the India-Japan strategic and global partnership.Later speaking to media the Foreign Secretary Mrs. Nirupama Rao said that the idea to look at the possibilities of civil nuclear cooperation have been amply expressed by both sides and there is enthusiasm for taking this project forward. She said that after the two rounds of fruitful and useful discussion there is a certain positive momentum to this process and so the impression in the media that it has been deferred or slowed down is not correct. She said that both have very clearly stated the resolve to strengthen cooperation in this area and come to an ultimate agreement.Earlier while expressing the hoping that Japan will be its partner in expanding its nuclear energy programme for peaceful uses, the Prime Minister had said that India recognises the sensitivity of this subject in Japan and he will not force the issue. He was replying to a question at the business luncheon meeting in Tokyo. In his address to the business and industry leaders Dr. Singh said that Japan as a global leader in energy efficient technologies can play a significant role in helping meet India growing energy requirements.. Dr Singh said that more than ever before India's buoyant economy, its young population and large markets can combine well with the technological prowess, manufacturing skills and financial resources of Japan. The Prime Minister said that he strongly believes that the two countries must synergise their complementary strengths to give momentum to Asian as well as global economic growth and prosperity.
