India invites Sri Lanka to find innovative, lasting solution to fishermen's problem

India has invited the Fisheries Minister of Sri Lanka for talks in to find innovative and lasting solution to the problem of fishermen of the two countries. The decision was taken at the 9th session of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Commission meeting in Colombo this evening. <br/><br/>The meeting was co-chaired by Foreign Ministers of the two countries, Ms Sushma Swaraj and Mr Mangala Samaraweera. Briefing the media at the conclusion of the meeting, Ms Renu Lall, Joint Secretary, Foreign Ministry said that all issues of bilateral importance were discussed at the meeting.<br/> <br/>The three hour long meeting of the 9th session of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Commission took forward the initiatives announced by the two countries during the visit of Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi to Sri Lanka last year. On the issue of fishermen, the two sides agreed to find innovative and lasting solutions to this complex problem and India invited Sri Lankan Fisheries minister to India for further talks. <br/><br/>A workshop will be organized in Colombo later this month to address the misgivings among some sections of Sri Lanka on the proposed Economic and technological Cooperation Agreement that is being negotiated. Sri Lankan government has given environment clearance to the proposed NTPC power plant in Trincomalee. India has also been invited by Sri Lanka to partner in setting up a Special Economic Zone in Trincomalee. <br/><br/>Cooperation in developing renewable energy and defence is sought to be enhanced in the coming year. It was announced that the two sides will work to develop Ramayana circuit in Sri Lanka for tourism. Indian extensive development programme in Sri Lanka was reviewed. Two MoUs were signed by the two leaders at the conclusion of the meeting under which India will renovate 27 schools in Northern Province and supply medical equipment for a Hospital in Batticaloa.
