India gets Olympic berth in swimming
World Swimming body FINA has granted India an Olympic berth in swimming. The world body awarded the berth yesterday to Karnataka swimmer Gagan AP Ulalmath in the men's 1,500 metres freestyle event of the London Olympics under the 'Universality' quota. The surprise move shut the door on other more well-known swimmers Viradhwal Khade (100m freestyle), Sandeep Sejwal (100 metres and 200 metres breaststroke), Aaron d'Souza (200 metres freestyle) and Saurabh Sangvekar (1500 metres freestyle). Swimming Federation of India Secretary-General Virendra Nanavati told PTI that it was the prerogative of the FINA to pick a swimmer from the country who could not have any representation. Under the 'Universality' quota, participation in the World Championships is a must and Gagan had taken part in 800 metres freestyle in that event held in Shanghai in July last year. He clocked 8 minutes, 21.23 seconds. Nanavati said Gagan took part in 800 metres freestyle in World Championships but his Olympic berth is in 1500 metres freestyle. He said it is the prerogative of FINA to choose the swimmer and event also. So, India cannot do anything, he said.
