India begins medal hunt in CWG with a Silver & Gold; Oz leads with four GoldsIndia's medal hunt in the commonwealth games began with women weightlifters bagging Silver and Bronze in the 48 kg category. On the first day, Games power house Australia has bagged 4 Golds to lead the table. South Africa, Canada and Nigeria have won one Gold each.India had mixed fortunes as the hosts recorded impressive wins in tennis, badminton and archery, but the swimmers disappointed. Soniya Chanu got the first medal for the hosts as she won the Silver while compatriot Sandhya Devi won the bronze in the 48 kg category. Nigerian teenager A.M, Nwaokolo had the honour of winning the first gold of the games, winning the event.In tennis, India's Rohan Bopanna and Rashmi Chakravarthy scored impressive victories in the Singles matches. In mixed doubles, India's Leander Paes and Sania Mirza made a winning start to their campaign for the Gold demolishing pair from Lesotho 6-1, 6-0. However Rohan Bopanna teaming up with Nirupama Sanjeev lost in the mixed doubles to top seed Australia pair of Paul Hanley and Anastasia Rodionova. In Badmiton, India blanked Kenya 5-0 in the mixed team event while in tabletennis the hosts routed neighbour Srilanka 3-0.In women's hockey, India drew its match with Scotland. Both the teams were locked 1-1. Australia's Kylie Palmer took the gold in 200 meter freestyle, compatriot Alicia Coutts won the women's 200 metre medley and team Australia bagged the gold in 400 metres freestyle relay for men. Ryan Cochrance of Canada with an impressive performance bagged the gold in men's 400 free style. South Africa's Chad Guy Dertrand won the men's 200 meters butterfly.Meanwhile, President of Commonwealth Games Federation Michael Fennell has expressed satisfaction and happiness the way transport, security, and movement of athletes and spectators are being managed following the opening of games yesterday. Addressing a special inaugural of Commonwealth Business Forum in New Delhi this evening, he expressed hope that the challenge will be sustained till the closing ceremony. He said, athletes are happy and comfortable. Mr. Fennell said that the mega events of this kind always experience problems. He said that solutions have been found and put in place for the biggest ever contingent that the commonwealth games have ever witnessed.Secretary General of Commonwealth Kamlesh Sharma said that the very opening ceremony has negated all the adverse media reports. He said, the sportsmen spirit will be renewed and re-established during the games. Mr. Sharma called it a great opportunity for capacity building for Commonwealth countries.Member of International Olympic Committee Timothy Fok said, the successful celebrations have shown that India has come up the age of global business. The games is truly promoting incredible India.Chairman of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014, Lord Smith said, that he is privileged to be a witness of the spectacular event.Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Mr. Anand Sharma observed, India has made a statement by organising the Commonwealth Games that it is ready to engage with the world not only politically and economically but also through sports. He said, the games will have multiplier effects for the country in terms of infrastructure. Mr. Sharma said that the Commonwealth trade has already crossed four trillion Dollars with India having a share of eighty billion alone.The Delhi Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairperson Suresh Kalmadi said that the participants have told him that the infrastructure is much better than what was available during Beijing Olympics. He said that some sportsmen did not participate either due to personal reasons or they were not found fit. He thanked the entire team of four thousand people who slogged to organise the game successfully.
