India's medal winning spree in the 19th commonwealth games got off to a flying start as the women weighlifters won two medals in the 48 kg category.Soniya Chanu bagged the silver while compatriot Sandhya Devi won the bronze. Nigerian A.M, Nwaokolo had the honour of winning the first gold of the games, winning the event.In tennis, India had mixed fortunes as Rohan Bopanna and Rashmi Chakravarty outclassing their opponents in the singles. However in the mixed doubles Rohan Bopanna and Nirupama Sanjeev went down to top seed Australian pair Paul Hanley and Anastasia Rodionova.In swimming Indian Quartet of Virdhawal Khade, Anshul Kothari, Arjun Jayaprakash and Aaron D'Souza created history by entering the final of the men's 4 x 100 freestyle relay.However, there was overall dissapointment in the pool, as the swimmers crashed out in the Preliminary stages.In badmiton, India Blanked Kenya 5-0. The hosts potential gold medal winner in the women's singles Sania Nehwal crossed the first hurdle defeating Mercy Joseph of Kenya in straight sets 21-11, 21 -4. Meanwhile, President of Commonwealth Games Federation Michael Fennell has called the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games a magnificent one.He expressed satisfaction and happiness the way transport, security, and movement of athletes and spectators were managed. He said this while addressing a special inaugural of Commonwealth Business Forum in New Delhi this evening.
