India-German talks: permanent seat for India at UNSC high on agenda

A coordinated strategy for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council for India was high on the agenda of the discussion between the External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle in New Delhi. Both the countries are aspiring to be at the high UN table. The Two leaders discussed a host of other issues in the first meeting after the two countries were elected as non permanent members to the UN Security Council early this month. The Foreign Ministers of the two countries focussed on enhancing the bilateral strategic partnership. Though the centre of discussions remained the reforms in the UN Security Council reflecting the present day global realities, climate change and international security apart from resolution of regional conflicts also figured prominently in the talks. The German Foreign Minister called on the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh early this morning and will later meet Commerce and Industry minister Anand Sharma and the UPA chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi . The Germany is keen to cement the relations further with India with emphasis on increasing trade and investment . As the German foreign minister says India in is perceived as arising global power in that country, it is high time the two countries join hands to address the pressing global issues including the threat of terrorism and reforms in the international financial institutions as well.
