England to retain 2nd positionOn the 6th day of the Commonwealth Games, India is facing stiff competition from England to retain the 2nd position in the medals tally. Australia meanwhile, have gained a massive lead with 48 gold. With one gold and three more bronze added this morning India's medal tally has gone up to 21 gold, 16 Silver and 15 Bronze medals. Vijay Kumar and Harpreet Singh won gold for India in 25 metres Centre fire pistol pairs in shooting. India is just one gold behind their second best tally of 22 gold in the last Games in Melbourne. England also have 20 gold while Canada have 14. The hosts had won 14 medals yesterday, including six gold and a rare athletics bronze in track events. The first medal today came in Athletics with Harminder Singh securing bronze in 20 Kilometer Men's walk race. Australia won the gold and silver in the event. Harminder Singh expressed happiness over his victory. In Women's category, England's Jo Jackson won gold. Australia's C. Tallent won silver while Kenya won bronze. India won their second medal in shooting Suma Shirur and Kavita Yadav finished third in 10 meter Air rifle pairs. The Third medal of the morning came from Table-Tennis as Indian men's team defeated Nigeria 3-0 in contest for the third place. In Wrestling, India's Yogeshwar Dutt advanced into the semifinals of the 60 Kilogram freestyle event, while Anil Maan lost his match in the 96 Kilogram category. Narsingh Pancham Yadav in 64 kg category advanced to the finals beating Mc donald of With a haul of 20 Gold medals so far, India remain well on course to better its past record of 30 in Manchester Games, Eight years ago as the Games reach the halfway mark. With 32 gold up for grabs in Archery, shooting, Wrestling, weightlifting and Tennis events, India's quest for more medals will be watched with huge fanfare before the home crowd throughout the day. Of these, the Maximum of 9 gold medals each will be decided in swimming and athletics, while Shooting will account for 4 gold medals. Wrestling will offer 3 golds followed by 2 each in Tennis, Archery and weightlifting events. In Table Tennis, gold will be decided in men's team event. Hosts India are hoping for Gold medals in Shooting, Wrestling, Tennis and Weightlifting events. Two golds will be decided in weightlifting in 94 kilogram men's and 75 kilogram women's categories. India are hoping for a good show from the lifters Gita Rani, Monika Laishram Devi and Srishti Singh in women's category. In shooting, Men's singles 50 meter rifle 3 positions event will see Gagan Narang and Imran Hasan Khan in action. Seema Tomar and Shreyashi Singh will be top contenders in women's Single trap event. In Tennis, India are certain of collecting a couple of medals with Sania Mirza competing in the Singles Final against Australian Anastasia Rodionova. India are assured of a Bronze in men's doubles as Mahesh Bhupati and Leander Paes will be facing Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Devverman for a third place finish. For India, shooter Gagan Narang plucked his third gold medal by winning the 50m 3-position pairs event with partner Imran Hasan Khan yesterday. Pistol experts Vijay Kumar and Omkar Singh became the champions in 25m rapid fire and 10m air pistol events. In Archery, the recurve team of Dola Banerjee, Bombayala Devi and Deepika Kumari opened the gold medal account at the archery range. Later Women grapplers Alka Tomar (59kg freestyle) and Anita (67 kg freestyle) fought their way to gold medals. Long distance runner Kavita Raut also made history by becoming the first athlete to bag a medal, bronze, in women's track events in the Games history. The country also bagged five silver and three bronze medals. Seasoned trap shooting pair Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Mansher Singh got a silver in pairs trap event, pistol expert Vijay Kumar stood second in the 25m Rapid Fire event, and grappler Babita Kumari won another silver in the women's 51kg category. India also won silver in the team event of women's table tennis and badminton and Ashish Kumar (artistic gymastics). Bronze standards were attained by rifle shooter Gurpreet Singh, in the 25m individual competition, men's archery trio of Rahul Banerjee, Jayanta Talukdar and Tarundeep Rai in the recurve competition and woman athlete Kavita Raut.
