India has extended $100mn as line of credit to Malawi for its overall development. A grant of $5mn has also been pledged. Four pacts were signed between India and Malawi today following the delegation level talks between the visiting President of Malawi Bingu wa Mutharika and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in New Delhi today. The agreements signed are in the fields of Health, rural devolpment and mineral resources.AIR correspondent Manikant reports that Mr. Mutharika invited the captains of industry to invest in Malawi while addressing them.President Mutharika who loves to call himself a Dilliwala, has played a positive role in strengthening the ties between India and the African Union as the chairperson of the African Union in the current year. The Pan-African e-Network Project, initiated by India, has been an important aspect of capacity building and support to the education and health sectors. Malawi is also a beneficiary of the new scholarship schemes offered to the African countries in the areas of agricultural sciences and scientific research. India today provided the third line of credit of 100 million US Dollars besides a line of credit of 30 million in 2008 and 50 million last year. Both the countries are working to take the bilateral trade volume to 200million US Dollars within two years which stands at 185 million.President Mutharika's visit is all set to provide an opportunity to enhance not only India's engagement bilaterally with Malawi but to reiterate its commitment to work with Africa as a whole.Earlier in the day, Mr. Mutharika was accorded ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. This is Mutharika's first visit to India as President of his country. He had studied at the University of Delhi in the 1960s. He is leading a team of six ministers of his cabinet as well as a large business delegation on a week long visit.
