India is pushing ahead with its efforts to expand tea trade in the West Asia and North African regions. For this purpose, the Tea Board of India has focussed on maintaining quality standards in keeping with the requirements of the export and domestic markets. Dubai continues to play a key role in the international tea trade due to its unique geographic location and provision of competitive logistic and storage services. It is a major intermediary for tea production centres and consumer markets and a major tea re-exporter in the world. Dubai remains the second largest export destination for tea from India.In 2010 alone, India exported 22.15 million Kgs. Of Tea worth Rs.337 crores to Dubai. Out of this quantity over 17 million kgs, was bulk tea. Given the nature of demand, Darjeeling Tea still occupies a pride of place in the region among those who prefer tea. The demand for Indian Tea has been encouraging at the ongoing Gulf Food 2012 in Dubai. Talking to AIR , the visiting Indian tea exporters said with marketing support and linkages, the exports can pick up substantially in the region. India is the second largest producer of Tea in the world with estimated production of 967 million kg in 2010.
