The 11th India-EU summit ended in Brussels with laying the road map for a Broad-based bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement, a decision to fight the menace of terrorism and intensifying cooperation in various strategic fields. A joint statement denounced those who sponsor, abet and instigate terrorism and provide safe haven to terrorists. It underlined that cooperation in combating international terrorism, including cross border terrorism, is one of the key priorities of India-EU strategic partnership. Addressing a joint press conference along with President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, after the summit, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh highlighted the issue. India and the 27-nation bloc has also decided to redouble efforts for an early bilateral trade and investment agreement. Dr. Singh said that a balanced agreement would bring enormous benefits to both the sides and the interests of small farmers and shopkeepers in India will be protected.Commerce secretary Rahul Khullar later told the media that a directive had been given by the leaders of both sides to complete the negotiations at the earliest. He said more than 50 per cent is already done and the aim was to conclude the remaining negotiations by March next year. A meeting of Indian Business leaders with EU, a cultural agreement with the European Union and bilateral meetings with the Belgian leaders were held to enhance mutual cooperation Outside the summit venue, protestors from various parts of Europe had gathered to demand that the EU should not undermine India’s potential to sell affordable drugs, especially in Europe and Africa. The organiser of the protest Julia Hill told AIR news in Brussels that affordable drugs from India save lives of people suffering from AIDS.The Prime Minister arrives in Germany today for a summit with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on various bilateral and international issues.
