India, EU trade doubled in last five years: PM

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh hopes negotiations on broad based trade and investment agreement with European Union will be concluded in a year. He said that trade in goods and a service between the two sides has doubled in the last five years despite the impact of the global economic melt down. It has reached 89 billion Euros. The Prime Minister said the agreement would be instrumental to increase economic opportunities, creation of jobs and wealth. EU commission president Mr. Barroso also underscored the importance of concluding the trade-opening pact that would help sustain the global economic recovery. He said there are signs of global rebound but they would require a push from the cross-border trade. The Prime Minister said that the two sides decided to forge stronger cooperation in the fields of Science and Technology, education and culture. Dr. Singh said that India is intimately affected by developments in Pakistan, Afghanistan, as New Delhi has a stake in peace and stability. Replying questions after the summit level talks with the President of EU Mr. Fredrick Reinfeldt and the president of the EU commission Mr. Jose Mannuel Borroso he said that Pakistan provided no information regarding arrest of two persons in Pakistan in connection with Lashkar-e-Taiba's plot to target vital installations in India. The prime minister asserted that the two sides reviewed the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan and emphasized the need to for concerted international action to combat terrorism. In this direction, the dialogue on concluding an agreement on terrorism is being intensified .The Prime Minister expressed hope that the international community will continue as terrorism is posing a grave threat to the International peace stability and development.
