A two-day India Education Fair for Sri Lankan students began in capital Colombo today. It was inaugurated by Parliament speaker Karu Jayasuriya in presence of High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Mr.Taranjit Singh Sandhu. A delegation of around 20 Universities from India are participating in the fair to educate Sri Lankan students on education opportunities in India. <br/><br/>The focus of the event is to invite students to study in India under various scholarships. Speaker Mr. Jayasuriya in his inaugural address said that India and Sri Lanka have a shared legacy of intellectual, cultural, religious and linguistic discourse dating back to more than 2500 years. He said educational linkages between the two countries occupy a special place in this framework of interactions. <br/><br/>High Commissioner Mr. Sandhu in his address said that lndian government has provided more than 700 scholarship slots to Sri Lankan students at various levels under the lndian Technical and Economic Cooperation Scheme. He said that Indian government in its bid to attract foreign students to Indian Universities, have opened up IIT entrance exams and National eligibility-cum-entrance test for foreigners. Dr. Vijay Kumar of Vellore Institute of Technology in his presentation stressed that Indian Universities are a much cheaper and suitable education for Sri Lankan students compared to their western counterparts.
