India determined to move forward on land boundary, interim Tista water sharing pacts with Bangladesh

Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai has said that India is determined to reach a satisfactory conclusion of goals set by the Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh. These goals include ratification of the land boundary agreement and an interim agreement on sharing of Teesta Waters. Mr. Mathai reiterated India's unwavering commitment to the early conclusion of both these agreements in the shortest possible time frame. He was addressing a joint press conference with Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque at the end of the foreign Secretary level talks in Dhaka. Responding to a question about extradition of Anoop Chetia under the recently signed extradition treaty which does not have provision for extradition of those involved in political crimes, Mr. Mathai said that Anoop Chetia can be covered under the available provisions in the treaty. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that she was looking forward to the proposed visit of the President Pranab Mukherjee to Dhaka in the first week of March this year.
