Foreign Secretary Mrs. Nirupama Rao has said, New Delhi is determined to accelerate the pace of rehabilitation in northern and eastern parts of Srilanka. Speaking to newsmen in Chennai this afternoon after meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr. M. Karunanidhi, she said a senior official from the centre will be going to the Island country early next month to assess the rehabilitation work being undertaken besides looking into the development needs of the people. Stating that extensive programme of assistance has been worked out for the Srilankan Tamils in the northern and eastern regions, she said India is committed to construct 50,000 houses in that area. Mrs. Rao said a pilot project of constructing thousand houses will begin shortly. The Foreign Secretary said, two Consul General offices will be opened in Jaffna and south of Srilanka by the year end.
