India has declared itself free from bird flu. A notification to this effect has already been issued. The government earlier notified out break of Avian Influenza, called bird flu in some area of Assam, West Bangal and Sikkim last year and early this year. There has been no further out break after that. However, the government says that the surveillance against bird flu will have to be continued through out the country specially in vulnerable areas bordering infected countries as well as the areas which are visited by migratory birds. The Centre has asked the states not to be complacent because of this declaration and must maintain vigil against the disease.
