India created history on Monday by sweeping all the medals in the women's discus throw at the Commonwealth Games. In the process, discus thrower Krishna Pooniya became the first Indian woman gold medalist in Athletics in the Commonwealth Games. The Rajasthan athlete's splendid golden finish also enabled the country to equal its previous-best gold medal haul in the Games' history and retain the second spot in the medals table behind Australia. Pooniya was delighted with her performance: India had won 30 Gold at Manchester eight years ago. At the end of the eighth day of competitions, India's medal tally stood at 30 Gold, 23 Silver and 28 Bronze. Australia led the table with a rich haul of 64 Gold, 40 Silver and 39 Bronze. In Badminton, India's star shuttler and world number three Saina Nehwal stormed into the women's singles semi-final. In Men's section, P. Kashyap and Chetan Anand also entered the last four stage. In the women's doubles, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa also entered the semi-final round. Monday was a day of mixed fortunes for Indian boxers. The much-heralded squad under performed with Olympic medal winner Vijender Singh and three others biting the dust in the semis and settling for the bronze. But there was consolation with the entry of southpaw Suranjoy Singh (52kg), Manoj Kumar (64kg) and Paramjit Samota (+91kg) into the finals after winning their semi final bouts. In Men's Hockey, India take on England in the semi-final today. The other semi-final will be played between Australia and New Zealand. In Commonwealth games 21 gold medals are up for grabs in today’s events of Aquatics Diving, Athletics, Gymnastics, Shooting, Rugby Seven, Table Tennis and weightlifting.
